Facilities for volleyball
The indoor game can only develop and prosper with the provision of suitably designed and equipped sportshalls. Sadly, in the UK many potential facilities are hindered by poor design and inadequate equipment.
This affects not only volleyball but other indoor court games such as basketball, handball and netball. The UK has a long history of outdoor sport and the specialist needs of these sports have been accepted, and significant provision exists. The same cannot be said for the indoor sports where multiple sports and activities are expected to share a single building, which by being multipurpose rarely assists the development of indoor team sports.
Things will not improve until the National Governing Bodies of the indoor team sports press their case to the funders, architects and managers of indoor facilities for the provision of specialist halls for each of these sports. For too long the current inadequate position has been tolerated. Those who wish to see indoor sports achieve the activity levels common in most other countries need to speak up.
